Show Preview! Tanya Tucker @ The District

Country royalty swings through Sioux Falls this Thursday night! She’s done it all, sung with everyone, even recorded an album with Jack White a few years back.

It’s a sit down show, some come prepared to shut up and listen! Y’all just might learn something.

From the country queen’s official bio:

Born in Seminole, Texas, Tanya had her first country hit, the classic “Delta Dawn,” at the age of 13 in 1972. Since that auspicious beginning Tucker has become one of the most admired and influential artists in country music history, amassing 23 Top 40 albums and a stellar string of 56 Top 40 singles, ten of which reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard country charts. Tucker’s indelible songs include some of country music’s biggest hits such as the aforementioned “Delta Dawn,” “Soon,” “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane,” “It’s a Little Too Late,” “Trouble,” “Texas (When I Die),” “If It Don’t Come Easy” and “Strong Enough To Bend.” Tucker is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two CMAs, two ACMs and three CMT awards. Recently, Tucker received four GRAMMY® Award nominations including Song Of The Year: “Bring My Flowers Now,” Best Country Album: While I’m Livin’, Best Country Solo Performance: “Bring My Flowers Now,” and Best Country Song: “Bring My Flowers Now.” The four nominations lead all 2020 Country GRAMMY® nominees.

Show Preview! RENT 20th Anniversary Tour

20 years? Really? Man, things have changed, and so much for the better. See for yourself right here in South Dakota when The Washington Pavilion brings RENT to the stage this week for two shows.

Then again… 20 years? Really? Hmmm… it started in 1996 according to the official blurb: “In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-Winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production.”

But that just makes us feel older. And hey, who’s ever staged a 24th Anniversary Tour? Maybe they’re just getting properly revved up for the 25th. Enjoy it either way.

Mash Madness Returns!

Skip the sports, head straight for the beer! For the 4th year in a row, our fine local breweries will be competing in Mash Madness, fermenting one-of-a-kind kegs just for the competition.

The tournament kicks off on First Friday (March 6th) and will wrap up on the 22nd. Download the app to track your drinks and to make your vote count.

We’re still not sure who’s in — the full list of participating breweries remains a secret. But Woodgrain (always a strong contender) has declared that they’re ready to rumble. Sounds like a fine start. Keep an eye out for updates here and at DTSF.com for updates as they become available.

Phillips Ave. Diner Marks 15 Years

Interesting article in the Argus Leader about the Phillips Ave. Diner. If you’re new-ish to town, you might think that the diner’s always been there, just another culinary option in a city that gets busier by the day.

But things weren’t always that way downtown, and at the time, moving the classic car to a little used city-owned parking lot was a bold move.

To quote:

According to historical accounts online and newspaper archives, not everyone was on board with moving the unique building to the heart of the city.

“There’s been a minor hubub (sic) growing over the diner, which some people say doesn’t fit with the character of downtown — out of place, jarring, ugly,” wrote the Argus Leader editorial board in July 2005 in a piece supporting the location.

Sounds like they’ve changed their tune! Read more at the Argus Leader. (And if you’re hitting your “free article” wall, just subscribe already. Digital is dirt cheap, and supporting local journalism is the responsible thing to do!)

Show Preview: Mason Jennings @ ICON

Minnesota boy done good, Mason Jennings is strumming up some sensitive singer-songwriter rock tonight at the Icon. Opening is local vet Rich Snow, a guy worth checking out too, even without a national act following up.

New to Mason Jennings? Why not start with his latest Songs From When We Met, recorded in Wisconsin with the Bon Iver crew at the helm. He’s a fascinating guy, signed by Jack Johnson, provided the sound of Bob Dylan for Christian Bale’s version of Bob in the film I’m Not There.

Get out there and catch some tunes! Things get going at 7:00. $25 at the door.
