Hey Punk Rock fans! We’ve got a big little show coming up at the The Icon. Against Me! front-lady Laura Jane Grace will be taking the stage Sep. 30th for an acoustic show.
We caught Against Me! back at whatever-that-old-club-off-of-29 was called around a decade ago…and they brought more rock than we deserved. Against Me! always had a little more soul, and a little more to say than the other pop-punk/emo bands that were scoring hits at the time. Tune in to Laura Jane’s journey over the last few years, and it becomes very clear as to why.
So get on out there and find out what the fuss is all about!
Is there good local-ish music in Sioux Falls? Yes! Want proof? Head out to the Four Winds Festival and prepare to have some fun! This year they’ve got two nights of tunes ready to roll at the Icon Lounge. Let’s hope the weather holds!
All ages too! So let the high school kids off the leash, mom and dad. They need need this, just like you once did.
We were skeptical when we first caught wind of the Levitt Pavilion going up near Fall’s Park. With a streak of music-snobbery we had to ask: Who were these guys? Who were they gonna book? Was this going to be any fun?
Thankfully, we’ve been proven wrong. Whether you’ve heard of the acts or not, it’s always a high-quality (and free!) show. You can never go wrong swinging by and checking it out. This year looks to be the best yet. They’ve got a bigger mix, including western swing vets The Hot Club Of Cowtown, indie-rap lady-boss Dessa, and the bass player from The Stray Cats, Lee Rocker!
Rounding it all out will be local favs like Kory & The Fireflies, kids shows, local openers and more. Here’s the list:
June 3: The Burroughs
June 4: The Clover Fold
June 9: Sonia De Los Santos
June 10: Carrie Newcomer
June 11: D’DAT
June 16: Avey Grouws Band
June 17: Toronzo Cannon
June 18: Brody Ray
June 23: Inez Barlatier
June 24: Brian Hanegan Quintet

Swaggy schwag Colleen Green button we picked up the last time around!
Why do we hate Covid? Because it put the kibosh on the coolest scene in town – the indie rock shows at Total Drag! (Well that and loss-of-life, political division, etc., etc…) Slowly but surely, things are changing. The kids are getting back in the vans and heading out to chase rock ‘n roll history once again.
Total Drag is on it, gearing back up with concerts that are always worth checking out. They just announced two new shows that are, in our opinion, unmissable.
The first: Colleen Green on May 19th! We caught her twice at Total Drag in the olden-days, and had a blast each time. She’s a one-man show, but brought a drummer along for the beats her first time out. That was rad, if noisy. The second time it was her and a drum machine. That was our favorite. Set the home-made vibe just right. Not sure who’s she’s touring with now, but we’ll be sure to find out!
The second: Damien Jurado on June 1st! We first got wise to Damien’s evocative troubadour-ing on the soundtrack to Netflix-s cult documentary “Wild Wild Country.” He’s got a string of great albums out there, channeling the vibes Laurel Canyon. 70s smooth, but you know, in the good way.
Pick up your tickets soon – these could be sell-outs!
Ok, caveat first: We don’t know, nor care, much about All Time Low. However (however!!!) we need more of this kind of thing in Sioux Falls!
Our live concert scene was starting to come together pre-covid. Cool little indie bands would be at Total Drag twice-a-week, mid-level acts showed up at the Icon or the Orpheum, big stuff hit The Denny, and The District seemed to find a way with bringing in plenty of profitable shows too.
So find yourself a high-school kid that needs a night out and take ’em to see All Time Low this Wednesday, October 27th. Consider it a donation to the world of Rock ‘n Roll. Then play ’em some Clash on the way home. You gotta start ’em somewhere!
