Review: Waitress @ The Washington Pavilion

Some people were born loving musical theater, some have had musical theater thrust upon them. Yeah, I’m the latter category, but I’m glad that I’m catching on. Having a dramatic kid in the house helps get guys like me out of their snobby shells!

Last Tuesday the troupe touring Waitress brought the show to the Washington Pavilion, playing to a sold-out-ish crowd. Waitress was a little film about a small town gal who bakes her feelings into award-winning pies at a small town diner. Sara Bareilles — she who won’t write you a love song — adapted the film into a musical back in 2015 and it’s had a great run.

Fantastic cast on this one, with Ms. Bailey McCall taking the lead role. Her voice alone could carry the show – really exceptional, earning a double round of applause on the big number “She Used To Be Mine.” Also: Live band. Canned music always sounds a little off at these things, a little overdone, a little out of step with what’s happening on stage. These guys nailed it.

The Pavilion’s been bringing more show like this to town, and you ought to give them a chance. Looking to get your feet wet? Next season they’ve got the Jimmy Buffett musical “Escape to Margaritaville” on the bill. How ’bout that for a gateway drug?

Show Preview! RENT 20th Anniversary Tour

20 years? Really? Man, things have changed, and so much for the better. See for yourself right here in South Dakota when The Washington Pavilion brings RENT to the stage this week for two shows.

Then again… 20 years? Really? Hmmm… it started in 1996 according to the official blurb: “In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-Winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production.”

But that just makes us feel older. And hey, who’s ever staged a 24th Anniversary Tour? Maybe they’re just getting properly revved up for the 25th. Enjoy it either way.

Washington Pavilion Announces Performance Series

Too soon to plan ahead for next fall? Not for these big shows at the Washington Pavilion! Every year “The Pav” brings touring companies to Sioux Falls. These are big city productions that hit the road, expanding the reach of their shows to folks that can squeeze in a trip to Broadway.

Think the Pavilion is all about snooty high brow art? Guess again! This year they’re kicking everything off with a musical based on the music of Jimmy Buffet. We’re assuming record bar sales that evening. Be sure to dust off the Tommy Bahamas and do your part!
