Mix 97.3 Goes Back In Time!

If you tuned into Mix 97.3 last weekend, it was all Huey Lewis for hours and hours and hours on end. Sure, we like The News as much as anybody, but what gives?

Looks like they decided to bring back a staple of the Siouxland 80s FM dial: KKRC 97.3. They’re now playing the greatest hits of the 80s, with a few of those 70s and 90s songs that sat on the cusp of the decade thrown in for good measure.

How will this shake out? Time will tell. Local radio will always deliver something you can’t find on a satellite mix, let a lone Spotify, so we’re glad to see them keeping the local vibes alive.

But as anyone who live through the 80s knows, it was half awesome and half awful. Will they be playing the fun stuff, or the drek? Will it be more Karma Chameleon or more Kokomo?

We’ll be spinning the dial to find out!

Afroman Rhymes Up Your Hometown

Well, this was off our radar. It seems that back in 2011, Afroman immortalized the great State of South Dakota on his release Cross-Country Pimpin’.

It’s a travelog of frustration, roughly happening along the I-90 corridor. He claims “Bookings in Brookings,” although we can find no proof that he actually performed here.

Set to the tune of Hotel California, it ain’t a bad little jingle, or at least it ain’t bad if you’re a fan of his big hit “Because I Got High.” Afroman’s kept active ever since, with his holiday album A Colt .45 Christmas being a guilty pleasure around here. Maybe this will get a few more spins too. Maybe Kristi Noem can use it for her next commercial?

From a sociological standpoint, he seems to have gotten the concept of Midwestern Nice right on the money: Lots of friendly talk, but alas, no action.

Give it a listen and let us know your thoughts. NSFW, obviously.

Sioux Falls Get an Upvote!

If you can’t be real famous, maybe you can be ok with being Reddit famous?

A local guy with the handle “SoDakZak” popped a pic of a B&G Milky Way sign for the r/Funny sub-reddit and it took off, earning over 70k points and 300 plus comments.

Milky Way (or B&G, depending on who you ask) keeps the cute going all summer long, with a steady rotation of goofy thoughts and “the kids say the darndest things” quotes to amuse the minivan moms and dads heading out for a wholesome weekend treat.

Nice work, SoDakZak!

Boss’s Comedy Club Returns!

Local comedy finally found its footing a few years ago when Nathan Hults brought the laughs to Boss’s Pizza on Minnesota Ave. They turned the side-room into Boss’s Comedy Club, featuring regular open mics, local favorites, and hosting touring comedians from all over.

We were sad to see them go, but it turns out that the show ain’t over!

Boss’s Comedy Club now has a new location as part of the expanding operations of Boss’s Sports Bar at the Ramada across from the Denny Premier Center.

Perfect timing, if you ask us. With the election coming up, we need ’em now more than ever!

Get out and have a laugh. You’re gonna need it!

Popped Into Fernson For A Few

oh yeah, we also got some fries…

Yeah, we don’t get out as much as we used to these days. Covid numbers keep climbing, and we’d like to think that we’re doing our part by keeping the outings a little fewer and farther between.

But sometimes you’re downtown and temptation takes over. So we stopped into Fernson for some of their pork-belly tacos and a pint or two of goodness. Just our luck, the tacos were sold out!

Not giving up on a good time, we ordered the lamb and beef chislic, one of their new fruit-punch Skip Day Seltzers and a Seed Series Smoothie Pale Ale. And that did the trick just fine.

We’ve sampled a lot of chislic over the years, but Fernson served up what’s probably the juiciest, most tender meat-bits that we’ve ever had on a skewer.

As for the drinks, the Seltzers will definitely keep your carb-free diet happy, but in a good way. The Seed Series Pale Ale was just right. Not overdone, just crisp and hoppy, perfect for a summer’s eve. We’d do it all over again…maybe tonight? Hit us up!
