Afroman Rhymes Up Your Hometown

Well, this was off our radar. It seems that back in 2011, Afroman immortalized the great State of South Dakota on his release Cross-Country Pimpin’.

It’s a travelog of frustration, roughly happening along the I-90 corridor. He claims “Bookings in Brookings,” although we can find no proof that he actually performed here.

Set to the tune of Hotel California, it ain’t a bad little jingle, or at least it ain’t bad if you’re a fan of his big hit “Because I Got High.” Afroman’s kept active ever since, with his holiday album A Colt .45 Christmas being a guilty pleasure around here. Maybe this will get a few more spins too. Maybe Kristi Noem can use it for her next commercial?

From a sociological standpoint, he seems to have gotten the concept of Midwestern Nice right on the money: Lots of friendly talk, but alas, no action.

Give it a listen and let us know your thoughts. NSFW, obviously.

Sioux Falls Get an Upvote!

If you can’t be real famous, maybe you can be ok with being Reddit famous?

A local guy with the handle “SoDakZak” popped a pic of a B&G Milky Way sign for the r/Funny sub-reddit and it took off, earning over 70k points and 300 plus comments.

Milky Way (or B&G, depending on who you ask) keeps the cute going all summer long, with a steady rotation of goofy thoughts and “the kids say the darndest things” quotes to amuse the minivan moms and dads heading out for a wholesome weekend treat.

Nice work, SoDakZak!

Boss’s Comedy Club Returns!

Local comedy finally found its footing a few years ago when Nathan Hults brought the laughs to Boss’s Pizza on Minnesota Ave. They turned the side-room into Boss’s Comedy Club, featuring regular open mics, local favorites, and hosting touring comedians from all over.

We were sad to see them go, but it turns out that the show ain’t over!

Boss’s Comedy Club now has a new location as part of the expanding operations of Boss’s Sports Bar at the Ramada across from the Denny Premier Center.

Perfect timing, if you ask us. With the election coming up, we need ’em now more than ever!

Get out and have a laugh. You’re gonna need it!

Flashback: The Sioux Sea Serpent!

You’ve really got to stop and read those weird green metal “historical markers” from time to time. You just never know what you might learn.

Think you’re safe splashing around the E. coli-infested waters of The Big Sioux? Think it makes sense to wade through the muck down by Tuthill Park to find your lost frisbee-golf discs?

You’ve got more than rusted-out tractor parts and heavy-metal pollution to watch out for. You might also run into our local version of the Loch Ness Monster.

Back in 1887 a few fisherman casting about in the river on the far east side of town spotted what they thought was a floating log. Then the thing started moving and scared the god-fearing pioneering daylights out of them. They described it as a “monster snake,” a good “20 feet long and a foot thick.”

Fortunately, it slithered off into the depths, never to been seen again. But is it gone for good? Or is it just biding it’s time, waiting for a day-drinking kayaker to take asunder? Time will tell…

You can read all about it on the gravel-road sign pictured here. It’s hiding in the weeds where 41st makes a last-ditch effort to get you to Iowa before the river takes over. Eventually, Mother Nature always wins.

Get Outta Bed Kids! It’s Record Store Day!

What? Record Store Day in August? WTF!!

Oh yeah, that’s right, RSD got Corona’d back in April, pushed out to August with the expectation that we’d all be safe and sound by then. And we are, right? Right? Well, maybe not, but we’re learning to live with it. And music helps. It’s just the medicine your soul needs most right about now.

Two spots in Sioux Falls have got the hook-up: Last Stop (10th St. location) and Total Drag.

Get there early. And if you need a little wake-up, be sure to grab a coffee from the brand-new joint next door to Total Drag: The Breaks Coffee.

More details on what might (might!) be available are here. But if you don’t go…you’ll never know! Mask-up, make some new friends and raid the crates before your fellow geeks beat you to it!
