Ger Yer Motors Runnin’! Huset’s Is Back.

The rise and fall of Chuck Brennan’s Badlands Entertainment Empire has been an entertaining thing to watch over the last few years.

For those not in-the-know, local impresario turned payday-loan tycoon Chuck Brennan leveraged his ill-gotten gain on a string of Badlands-themed businesses around Sioux Falls a few years back, hoping to cash-in on South Dakota’s outlaw-biker-meets-family-fun-destination reputation.

Nevermind that the Badlands are a long four-hour drive away, or that Sturgis is another notch past that. His theory seemed to be that if you put up enough billboards along 29 & 90 you should be able to siphon off enough traffic to make any dream come true, even if your dream revolves around pawnshops, grey-haired rockstars, and free tattoos.

A rebranded Huset’s Speedway — an institution just outside of town in Brandon — was to be another jewel in the Badlands Crown. He dumped $18 million into renovations and then found himself without a business plan to earn it back. (Shockingly, fun as it is to catch a race once-a-summer, there’s just not a ton of money in minor-league motor sports.) They did host Weezer for an outdoor concert, but the expected synergy between Nerd Rock and NASCAR failed to turn things around.

Fortunately the story ends well.

According the their website:

“The long-awaited sale of Huset’s Speedway has been finalized with Minnesota businessman Tod Quiring acquiring the 3/8-mile dirt track along with its assets. Quiring also owns Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., which he purchased in late 2015. Huset’s Speedway will continue its storied tradition of Sunday programs with 410 Outlaw Sprint Cars as the featured division. The first event under the new ownership will be Sunday, Aug. 2, during the C & B Operations Grand Reopening presented by Folkens Brothers Trucking. A $20,000 top prize will be awarded to the winner of the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions main event, which also pays $1,000 to start. The Late Model Street Stock Touring Series is also on the program. All Star Circuit of Champions owner Tony Stewart and Kyle Larson, who both rose to fame in NASCAR, will be racing against many of the sport’s best sprint car drivers.”

So it sounds like this guy knows what he’s doing!

We hope so. We haven’t had a chance to see what $18 million worth of renovations looks like, but maybe, God-Willing-and-the-Covid-Don’t-Rise, we’ll get our chance later this summer. It’s big kicks to squeeze some cotton in your ears and wash the dust down with a few Lite beers. Everyone should give it a shot!

Also, we do kinda miss Badlands Radio. They knew how to mix deep cuts with classic rock staples. It was a good driving-around-town soundtrack for a summer’s day. Maybe we’ll get to that story next time…stay tuned!

Tony Hawk In Town?

Tony Hawk was busted in the Badlands on Sunday for doing what comes naturally: Skateboarding!

It was all good — the fearless and friendly Park Ranger just wanted a selfie — but it got us thinking…any chance Tony’s hitting our skatepark today?

Tony & family are taking an All-American (and mostly Covid-sensible) vacation, RV’ing around the great wide-open spaces of the Wild West. While Sioux Falls is a happening town, it’s still an out-of-the-way place for most of our fellow Americans. But we are a great stop on the trail to some amazing sights, and it’s become something of a ritual around here to refresh a few weary travelers and long-lost friends every summer. Always a pleasure to do so!

So keep your eyes open. If you see Mr. Hawk kick-flipping around town, grab a selfie and send it over! We’d love to add a local twist to this story.

Bike Trail Heads East! New Extension Announced

We’ve got a great bike trail around this town. Not only is our 20ish mile loop a fun way to get some exercise on sunny day, it’s also a pretty useful way to get in and out of downtown without dodging cars and potholes.

Over the last few years, they’ve been making it even better, adding spurs to the northwest, the south, and someday… just maybe… the whole way to Brandon.

The city’s just announced that another 20 acres have been acquired along the north side of the Big Sioux. This will extend the spur that runs along the river from Falls Park past the often-odorous meatpacking plant, taking riders the whole way to Great Bear.

No one expects work to be completed for another summer or two, but that’s ok. It’s just good to know that our town keeps pedaling the right direction!

Have You Seen This Man? Guy Fieri Hits Up Sioux Falls!

I’m not one to spread mouth-watering rumours, but I don’t mind confirming one from time to time. Both the Argus Leader and SiouxFalls.Business are reporting a strong hunch that Guy Fieri — the flame-shirted Food Network hooligan — is spending a few days in Sioux Falls.

So far North and South Dakota are the only states that haven’t been on “Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives,” but with a Fieri sighting last week in Fargo, it looks like that’s about to change.

After checking with a few of my off-the-record sources, I can confirm that this celebrity showing is 100% true: Look’s Market is on the agenda for an upcoming episode of his long-running, much-loved basic cable TV show.

Now that’s some jaw-dropping news to chew on!

Seems like his other stop in town is going to be Bread & Circus. I have no direct info on that. But if you’ve got nothing going on today and would like to do some snooping, by all means make a pest of yourself and let me know what you find out. Pics or it didn’t happen!

But Guy, I’ve got to ask, why not a stop of Fiero Pizza? You can’t tell me you’re above punning around a personalized pizza. At least I’m not.

Back In The Saddle…Again!

Alright, things ain’t exactly back to normal around town. Not even close…

The ‘Rona is still lurking. The weekend was a riot. This isn’t the summer we were looking for. But this blog’s purpose is to reflect reality, not reimagine it. And as things are starting to happen — as patios open and show bookings begin — you’re gonna need this resource more than ever to keep up on what’s what. So here we go!

Buckle up, kids. We might be in for a bumpy ride.

In the meantime, take a minute to watch Aerosmith writhe around in 1977. Timeless? I don’t know, but it’s nice to know that some things never change. May we all be still be rockin’ 40 odd years from now:
