Campaign Stop! Libertarian VP Spike Cohen!

Libertarians at Falls Park
Yes, his name is Spike.

South Dakota’s a weird spot for national politics. While we’ve been getting headlines this year (Covid, Smithfield’s, Rushmore, Kristi Noem on Fox, etc…) we’re still pretty far off of the campaign trail for most big candidates. Why? ‘Cause the Republicans got a lock on our 3 teeny little electoral votes. So when someone does swing through, we like to take a look.

Last night it was Libertarian VP candidate Spike Cohen. He spoke for a bit at Falls Park, introduced by some other Libertarians running for local office, and took time get his selfie on with a gaggle of adoring fans.

Smart guy, filled with conviction. Whether or not the Libertarian solution is what this country needs is up to you. (We stay out of the endorsement racket!) But if you like your weed and love your guns, and just generally doin’ your own thang…well, he’s your man.

Regardless, it’s good to get a few more voices out there mixing things up. It’s a big country. No reason to stay stuck with two choices. Can we agree on that???

Go See Willie…Next Year!

Willie Nelson Corn Palace
Immortalized, for a season.

We’re still kicking ourselves for not grabbing some tickets floating around for Willie’s show at The Corn Palace a few years ago. (C’mon, Willie Nelson at The Corn Palace??? Does it get any more perfect than that???) But hopefully we’ll be making the trip up to Brookings next summer.

Like most things this year, Willie Nelson’s show at the Swiftel Center got booted to some later date TBD. Well, the news is in, and he’ll be bringing the family to South Dakota August 11th, 2021.

Yeah, that’s a long way, but get your tickets now and make it a date. The Red-Headed Stranger’s one of those ones you want to catch while you can.

Phew! Phew! There’s a Galaga Contest On Now!

Got a flair for mashing video game buttons, old-school style? Then get downtown to the EightyOne Arcade bar for your chance to prove your stuff!

If you’re too young to know, Galaga was the original “Space Invaders” type game, where you slide your little star-cruiser back and forth and launch missiles at an endless barrage of alien enemy attackers. It’s one of those games that starts easy but then goes crazy.

Here’s the deal on the contest:

If by midnight on the September 31st, you’ve got the high score you win a sweet classic Galaga console game for your home, all cleaned up and redone by the folks at Boulevard Brewing Company! It’s also sporting some graphics for their new Space Camper Cosmic IPA.

Did we mention Space Camper’s also available on draft? And that it’s only a $5 pull for a pint on Thursdays?

Go out get gaming!

Libertarian Candidate Coming to Sioux Falls!

Jo Jorgensen For President

Wait a minute! You mean there’s more than two guys running for President?

Why yes! You’ve got other choices, America! And going Libertarian is one of them! We aren’t going to get into politics here, but if you’re the kind of South Dakotan likes guns and weed and generally just being left alone, you might want to check them out.

This year Dr. Jo Jorgensen is running on the Libertarian ticket, and she’s making a stop in Sioux Falls September 22nd. The details are still being ironed out, but check out their “Save The Date” Facebook page for updates.

She’s a professor, a politician, a mom, and an entrepreneur. Sounds like she’s got a lot on-the-ball! Who knows, maybe she’ll have a few good ideas for the Washington too.

We’re planning on checking her out! At the very least, it’s good to options.

Mix 97.3 Goes Back In Time!

If you tuned into Mix 97.3 last weekend, it was all Huey Lewis for hours and hours and hours on end. Sure, we like The News as much as anybody, but what gives?

Looks like they decided to bring back a staple of the Siouxland 80s FM dial: KKRC 97.3. They’re now playing the greatest hits of the 80s, with a few of those 70s and 90s songs that sat on the cusp of the decade thrown in for good measure.

How will this shake out? Time will tell. Local radio will always deliver something you can’t find on a satellite mix, let a lone Spotify, so we’re glad to see them keeping the local vibes alive.

But as anyone who live through the 80s knows, it was half awesome and half awful. Will they be playing the fun stuff, or the drek? Will it be more Karma Chameleon or more Kokomo?

We’ll be spinning the dial to find out!
