Slamdakota Death Fest III – Oh Yeah, It Rocked!

For the third year in a row, Big’s Bar brought together the best Midwestern sons of Death Mental for a 2-night 20-something brutal band line up.

Getting it started while the sun still shines.

We headed up to catch the dueling stages on Saturday night, and not an eardrum was left unbled by the awesome assault of unbridled down-tuned fury.

Highlight had to be Gorgatron from Fargo, ND. These guys brought everything we could have hoped for: metal-tastic intensity, unleashed from a fortress of fun.

And that’s the thing with so many of these bands: Get past the wild-eyed antics, and they’re just good guys looking to have a good time. Sure, it’s the stuff that scares mom & dad and might just piss off the neighbors, but under it all, it’s just rock ‘n roll baby. And who couldn’t use a night of that?

See you next year for Death Fest IV!

Catch a Falling Star! Comet NEOWISE Is Here!

NEOWISE over Lake Alvin. Thanks Argus!

Looking for some Covid-safe family fun? Go comet hunting! You’ve still got a few more days to catch comet NEOWISE in the north sky over Sioux Falls.

We ventured out last night just past Hartford and were not disappointed. Yeah, it’s a little faint and fuzzy, but much bigger than we expected.

Our middling camera skills failed to get a decent shot, so take a look at the Argus Leader’s photo of NEOWISE just south of town at Lake Alvin.

If you’re looking to geek out, read up all about it on NASA’s website. They seem to know what they’re talking about.

GhostCat Live In The Headlights!

Sioux City’s finest indie rock band is doing an off-the-record pop-up show in Sioux Falls tonight. Want to get the scoop? You’ll need to head to https://www.parkandart.com/ and sign up!

A new underground arts collective called The Headlights Theater is making the most of the locked-down lifestyle, throwing after-dark shows in parking lots around town. Like the old raves of the 90s, they don’t tell you where the party’s gonna be until it’s time to get to the party!

So RSVP, but keep it on the down-low! ‘Cause the fuzz can’t bust what the fuzz don’t know!

Covid Delays In The News: State Theatre & Sioux Steel

While we’re masking up and making the best of it, there’s no doubt that some things are still getting stymied by the novel virus.

Two long-awaited projects around town have just announced that “umm guys, it’s gonna be a little longer than we thought…”

One of these makes us sad. One does not.

The State Theatre has been this close to opening for a few years now. With the monies kicked in from City Hall and Godfather T. Denny, it looked like 2020 was go-time! But alas, the Argus is reporting that it’s been hard to get the crews scheduled to finish up the job and even harder to get a reasonable, responsible event line-up together to make opening day something to celebrate.

Fingers crossed something comes together by Christmas time. Wouldn’t it be great to watch It’s a Wonderful Life on the big screen? These eyes wouldn’t be dry when the light comes back on!

The other delay is on the big Sioux Steel redevelopment project. While we’re all for continued building and a higher residential density downtown, the inexorable ringing of Falls Park with now-trendy glass-and-aluminum condos might not be the best thing for the city long term.

There’s already been a lot of concern about who owns what bit of the park-adjacent land. If you dig in, you’ll find that a lot of it used to be Seney Island – a favorite picnic spot until short-term thinking turned it into a dump. Maybe someone should use this covid-inflicted pause to reconsider what would be the best use of the land for the Sioux Fallsians of 2070?

We’re guessing that fifty years from now, another ten acres of river-front park-land will be looking like a much better investment than an aging office/hotel complex.

But that’s none of our business, right? Or is it…

Ger Yer Motors Runnin’! Huset’s Is Back.

The rise and fall of Chuck Brennan’s Badlands Entertainment Empire has been an entertaining thing to watch over the last few years.

For those not in-the-know, local impresario turned payday-loan tycoon Chuck Brennan leveraged his ill-gotten gain on a string of Badlands-themed businesses around Sioux Falls a few years back, hoping to cash-in on South Dakota’s outlaw-biker-meets-family-fun-destination reputation.

Nevermind that the Badlands are a long four-hour drive away, or that Sturgis is another notch past that. His theory seemed to be that if you put up enough billboards along 29 & 90 you should be able to siphon off enough traffic to make any dream come true, even if your dream revolves around pawnshops, grey-haired rockstars, and free tattoos.

A rebranded Huset’s Speedway — an institution just outside of town in Brandon — was to be another jewel in the Badlands Crown. He dumped $18 million into renovations and then found himself without a business plan to earn it back. (Shockingly, fun as it is to catch a race once-a-summer, there’s just not a ton of money in minor-league motor sports.) They did host Weezer for an outdoor concert, but the expected synergy between Nerd Rock and NASCAR failed to turn things around.

Fortunately the story ends well.

According the their website:

“The long-awaited sale of Huset’s Speedway has been finalized with Minnesota businessman Tod Quiring acquiring the 3/8-mile dirt track along with its assets. Quiring also owns Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., which he purchased in late 2015. Huset’s Speedway will continue its storied tradition of Sunday programs with 410 Outlaw Sprint Cars as the featured division. The first event under the new ownership will be Sunday, Aug. 2, during the C & B Operations Grand Reopening presented by Folkens Brothers Trucking. A $20,000 top prize will be awarded to the winner of the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions main event, which also pays $1,000 to start. The Late Model Street Stock Touring Series is also on the program. All Star Circuit of Champions owner Tony Stewart and Kyle Larson, who both rose to fame in NASCAR, will be racing against many of the sport’s best sprint car drivers.”

So it sounds like this guy knows what he’s doing!

We hope so. We haven’t had a chance to see what $18 million worth of renovations looks like, but maybe, God-Willing-and-the-Covid-Don’t-Rise, we’ll get our chance later this summer. It’s big kicks to squeeze some cotton in your ears and wash the dust down with a few Lite beers. Everyone should give it a shot!

Also, we do kinda miss Badlands Radio. They knew how to mix deep cuts with classic rock staples. It was a good driving-around-town soundtrack for a summer’s day. Maybe we’ll get to that story next time…stay tuned!
