We know we live in a glass house here at F*** Yeah! It’s Sioux Falls! There’s probably a misplaced comma or a fudged fact to be found in everything we post. We get it. It’s hard to get all of the details right, and we’ll happily issue a retraction if you find fault with our writing. Journalistic integrity and all that!

That being said… how does this happen?

There’s a big-ol’ billboard on 41st shining a light on the encouraging services that the Volunteers of America has to offer: support services, like helping folks get the education and life skills they need to land a solid a job. Little things — like misspelling common words — can sink an application, and it’s great that organizations like the VOA are out there to help.

So you think someone would have spell-checked the copy on this one, that some keen eye would have caught it along the way from graphic design to approval to printing to hanging. But these things happen, so we’re not going to get self-righteous about it. That would be hypocrisy, the least-forgivable of all sins.

Yes, these things happen. Still, it’s funny when they do.

This photo was taken yesterday. But it might as well be from a different era.

Yes, just yesterday The 57th Street Corn — our avatar of hope and resilience and possibility — still stood. Short but proud, she stood unbowed by the throngs of automobiles and constant construction at the corner of 57th and Minnesota Ave.

And we say “she” purposefully, for signs of new life spouted from her side. A solitary ear was growing there, tawny tassels waving in the wind, a sign that future generations of corn might someday spring from the concrete, a sure sign that mother nature will reclaim what was once rightfully hers, a reminder that fertile prairie soil still lurks below the pavement.

But now? She’s gone. Ripped from her crack-like furrow, laid to waste. It’s 2020 after all. Could we expect anything less?

So take a moment today to remember her. Pour yourself some corn-based bourbon and join us in a toast to The 57th Street Corn. The Corn That Could.

Looks like an employee at Sioux Falls’ premier (only?) spot for adult entertainment has tested positive for Covid-19. Anyone enjoying the sights and sounds the night of July 31st should probably hunker-down for a few weeks, for safety’s sake.

Not sure how to explain this one to the boss — or your special lady? That’s a little above our pay scale here at FYI Sioux Falls. Anyway, you’re just here to read the articles, right?

Ok. Apologies…the jokes write themselves with this one. (But honey, I wore a mask!!!) That being said, stay safe and keep an eye on your vitals if you happened to stop by the other week. Jokes aside, it’s good they reported this and let their patrons know.

Like a sticky Centipede track-ball, this is a bummer.

Six years ago, some local folks combined a fantastic craft beer selection with the throwback fun of full-sized video games to start The Bonus Round. Things seemed to be going good as they even expanded to downtown, helping to turn a quiet strip of 10th off Phillips into a funky sidestreet worthy of your whole evening.

But Covid craziness has a way a blowing up the budget, and instead of pumping another roll of quarters into the business they’ve decided to call it quits.

Might there be another game in their future? From their social media posts, it seems like they’re hoping to Level Up…

“It’s been almost six years since we opened our doors. We have had an absolute blast for the majority of that time. We have learned a lot and loved a lot, and our time to turn the page has come. It is not the end as much as it is the beginning of a new chapter of a great, great story. This will be our last week open to the public. We love everybody and hope you help us clear our shelves and empty our kegs and cry like babies this week. Cheers, folks.”

Add this to your little list of summer bummers: The plug’s been pulled on Riverfest 2020.

For the last few years, DTSF has put our new greenway/riverwalk zone to good use each August, lining up vendors and entertainment to enjoy one of the best parts of downtown. It’s been a great way to celebrate the progress we’ve made in re-imaging the Big Sioux.

Let’s face it. Our river ain’t epic. But it’s a nice thing, and the perfect duck-spotting backdrop for a summer stroll. When our team first came to Sioux Falls, it was still covered by a parking deck. Hard to believe that one of our finest natural features was relegated to “big sewer” status.

So it’s sad to see one more thing nixed. But it’s understandable, even from a purely logistical point of view. Vendors and entertainers everywhere have had to pull back and trim staff. Pulling off another big event this summer would be hard, even if everyone’s safety could be guaranteed.

Here’s to next year! You know we’ll be there.
