Light the Torches! There’s a Tiki Bar Coming To Town

Have your dreams of dashing to the South Pacific been crushed by Corona? Never fear! The Hello Hi is getting ready to put a splash of spiked pineapple in your cup, umbrella garnish included, gratis.

With its tiki-bar theme and tropical craft cocktails, the Hello Hi is just what our scene needs to take the heat out of summer days — or perhaps more importantly — help you escape the inevitable winter blasts that those darned Canadians love to send our way.

They’re opening soon-ish at 120 S. Phillips Ave (the former location of Half-Baked.) We’re looking forward to trying this one out!

Might just break out the hula skirt and coconut bra and shimmy on down for opening night!

How’s the Giliberto’s on the West Side? Awesome!

We finally made it over to the newest outpost of Giliberto’s! Located across from Roosevelt in a new plaza at the corner of Sertoma and 41st Street, this place is bound to hopping with high-schoolers once classes resume in September.

No shade to Nicky’s or Jacky’s, but Giliberto’s is our favorite place to grab a few burritos after a hard day or a long evening out. We were curious to see how the food compared to the other locations, so we picked up a few favorites to test them out.

Consistency is the one risk you take with local, independent joints. McDonald’s makes a science out of reassuring the world that one Big Mac is the same as another, from Tokyo to Toledo. While that’s reassuring it’s also a little creepy. I’d rather feel like I’m eating something made by a real person, perhaps even with a little love thrown in.

Would the West Side Giliberto’s live up to our taste bud’s high expectations? The answer is YES! Our burritos were generously stuffed, flavor-packed, and walked that greasy line between delicious and decadent.

We were more than satisfied and had a few bites left over for breakfast the next morning.

So Chipotle – take your time. We’ve got options! And there’s still no reason to settle for Qdoba.

Chipotle Stalls, Again!

Well this is getting a little redundant. Local burrito fanboys have been pushing for a Sioux Falls Chipotle for years now, celebrating every time corporate throws ’em a guac-smeared scrap of hope.

Things were finally on track for our very own source of cilantro-lime flavored goodness this fall, with a location secured in front of the Empire Mall.

That’s still a go, it’s that it’s going a little slow. Opening looks more like springtime, maybe Christmas. Que pena!

In the meantime, stop going to Qdoba and support the local goodness to be found at Giliberto’s, Jacky’s, and Nikki’s and some of the new taco trucks popping up around town.

New Beer Downtown: Tap Into Covert Artisan Ales!

We’ve been looking forward to this one! At Remedy’s Oktoberfest last year, Covert came out of hiding to win the People’s Choice award – and had our vote too – serving up some some high-flavor, yet perfectly balanced, libations to the assembled crowd of local experts. (Some of you guys did a lot of, uh, research that afternoon!)

At the time, Covert was content brewing and selling from their out-of-the-way industrial park spot way out on the west side. But destiny called, and they made the leap to a newly remodeled strip just across the parking lot from Monk’s House of Ale Repute.

Our “Brewer’s Row” took a hit when Fernson moved to Phillips, but with this new taproom, there’s no reason not plan an entire night bouncing around 8th Street, cooling off on a hot summer’s night.

And the winner is…!

Check ’em out!

Have You Seen This Man? Guy Fieri Hits Up Sioux Falls!

I’m not one to spread mouth-watering rumours, but I don’t mind confirming one from time to time. Both the Argus Leader and SiouxFalls.Business are reporting a strong hunch that Guy Fieri — the flame-shirted Food Network hooligan — is spending a few days in Sioux Falls.

So far North and South Dakota are the only states that haven’t been on “Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives,” but with a Fieri sighting last week in Fargo, it looks like that’s about to change.

After checking with a few of my off-the-record sources, I can confirm that this celebrity showing is 100% true: Look’s Market is on the agenda for an upcoming episode of his long-running, much-loved basic cable TV show.

Now that’s some jaw-dropping news to chew on!

Seems like his other stop in town is going to be Bread & Circus. I have no direct info on that. But if you’ve got nothing going on today and would like to do some snooping, by all means make a pest of yourself and let me know what you find out. Pics or it didn’t happen!

But Guy, I’ve got to ask, why not a stop of Fiero Pizza? You can’t tell me you’re above punning around a personalized pizza. At least I’m not.
